# Swiss supermarket location extract

The adjacent `swiss-supermarkets.json` is a modified extract of OpenStreetMap data, © OpenStreetMap contributors, available under the [Open Database License (ODbL) 1.0](https://opendatacommons.org/licenses/odbl/1-0/). Source and attribution information: <https://www.openstreetmap.org/copyright>.

## Method and limitations

One offline Overpass query selected `shop=supermarket` nodes, ways and relations within the OSM Swiss country area. The exact query, upstream replication timestamp and ingestion timestamp are in the JSON. It is not a retailer census or evidence that every store is present or trading today. Border-area shopping outside Switzerland, convenience shops, specialty shops, prices, stock and opening hours are outside this extract.

Transformation: retain only OSM type/ID, name, brand and coordinates; filter features explicitly marked private/no-access, disused, abandoned, demolished or under construction. Strip contact details, address tags, contributor metadata and unrelated tags. Sanitize control/markup characters in labels; use a descriptive fallback for unnamed features. Reject invalid coordinates, duplicate feature IDs and partial/error responses. Nodes use their mapped point; ways/relations use the middle of their bounding box, not a verified entrance. Distinct mapped features may still describe the same business. Do not infer unique-store counts from feature counts.

The source replication timestamp is not a shop observation date. Individual observation dates are unknown. The application treats the extract as stale after 30 days, using both source and ingestion timestamps; it does not show stale distances. Distances are approximate straight lines calculated in the browser, not travel routes, minutes or accessibility checks.

No household input, restricted price feed, retailer photo or receipt is part of this derivative. Keep those datasets separate and review their own rights. Normal product use serves this file from the application host, not public Overpass. For ongoing production ingestion, arrange an appropriate extract service or instance and an operational refresh process; public Overpass is not the user-facing backend.

Scope and policy review: 5 September 2026. This records implementation conditions, not formal legal clearance. Recheck relevant source/service terms when changing use, especially report exports, new datasets or downstream APIs.
